Caught item entity turns red when fishing

While fishing, I discovered that when you catch a fish, the dropped item entity turns a dark shade of red for a split-second before entering your inventory. In order to reproduce this, you must catch a fish and follow the entity until in reaches you. Items I have seen affected by this: fish, salmon, lily pad.
