Minecart models always appear to face south or east when placed or moved on rails

The models of minecarts will always appear to face south or east when placed or moved along rails (most notably when moved around corner rails). This affects all minecart models, but is primarily noticable with models that have directional elements like the furnace and chest minecarts with their chest lock, and front face of the furnace.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Recreate the following setup:

    [media]
  2. Place down a chest or furnace minecart

Observed Behavior:

The hinge of the chest minecart will always face towards the south or east direction, and the front of the furnace minecart will always face north or west (the furnace is "backwards" in the model, which is why it is inverted).

Expected Result:

The minecart would always face the direction it is traveling towards, instead of having a static orientation.

Old description

Special minecarts (with chest, furnace, TNT) notably face only one static direction. The lock on chests always faces south or east, and the face side of the furnace always faces north or west (TNT is affected too, but is harder to explain).

I suppose these blocks should always be facing the same direction as the minecart's moving to, and not relative to the world.

Might be related to MC-201, as the player's field of view is also not affected by the minecart's moving direction.

Dammit, just found out this issue is partial duplicate of MC-8309. Well, this affects not only furnace minecarts but any minecarts.

Either way, this is still present in 14w11b, even if it was much older than I'd thought.

While this may not be necessary, I have written a new description of this report with a cleaner format:

Still present in 1.21.8.

The direction of travel of furnace minecarts is affected by this. Refuelling a furnace minecart that is facing the wrong direction as a result of this bug will cause it to reverse its direction of travel. To work around this bug, place minecart tracks so the refuelled furnace minecart can switch direction.
