Boats going faster on ice than in water

The bug

Boats move faster on ice than in water. They are also somewhat harder to steer, seeing as how the ice is making the boat slide.

Can confirm.

Grandfroid

It's in the game since Pre-1, work on ice, packed ice if you have a 2 block large path.

You can reach up to 150 bps ...

Here's a french video demonstrating the bug : https://youtu.be/xLekF6nDMbA

user-f2760

can confirm

Bren Rado

Is this still an issue in Minecraft 1.9 pre 3?

Noah Barr

Can we...keep this? Or make this bug into a feature, like a sled for ice and snow? This bug is pretty great.

Grandfroid

@Noah Barr, A bug, is a hug and need to be fix ....

PS : No need for the ice to be "in water", work outside of water.

g10r

Also in 1.9 release

Logan Touya

Can confirm for 1.9 release, but this bug isn't necessarily game-breaking unless frozen oceans made a comeback. So I support keeping this bug.

Grandfroid

@Logan, since you don't need any water bellow the ice and the fact that it work inside the nether. All this with the fact that it's A LOT MUCH FASTER than minecart or horses, it's game breaking !!!

Why did they remove friction on ground block (grass or other) during pre-realease but not ice ... A bug like this one doesn't have any sense ...

007a83

Please make this bug a feature. this is awesome.

Logan Touya

Nothing wrong with faster transportation~ [We've been trying to make it faster for years!] it doesn't affect combat or general multiplayer play with unfair advantages, given silk touching ice and general nether travel are somewhat late-game things.

It would make exploring new areas more fun with travel time in the nether being shortened! And think of new redstone train stations people could make! With large cities connected in a more modern-style than minecarts!

Grandfroid

There was a time (1.8 snapshot) where minecarts were traveling at almost 150 bps like in this bug and they correct it ...
Minecraft is not just about "combat or general multiplayer play" you know ... And you don't even need silk touch, packed ice work the same way ...

Logan Touya

Packed ice also requires silk touch the last time I checked, but I understand the reasons why it should be fixed.

In the end however, it's ultimately up to the Mojang team if they want to fix it, I just wanted to throw out my opinion/thoughts. (Which aren't always right!)

Justin Lawen

Seems to be more like 25m/s in the latest release (1.9). I for one think of this as a very good emergent behavior, as long as the speed is capped at something reasonable. A cap at 20m/s sounds better to me personally, but 25m/s is way better than 150m/s! Comparatively, horses have a max speed of ~15m/s.

Paola Mancini

They will decide if boats speeding on ice(bergs) will remain in the game.

RimaNari

I can picture this one becoming the new shifting floors or glass tube elevator - people start using it after it doesn't get fixed and years later Mojang announces it's a bug and gets fixed. So much more then Mojang fixing or not foxing this one in whatever time they get around to doing it I would like Mojang to communicate whether they intend to fix or not fix it.

However, seeing what they did fix in the past, I recon this one is unintended and would be fixed whenever they have to do other changes to the code portion responsible for this, which is probably only when there emerges a more severe bug out of the same source. So I wouldn't use it, really.

Grandfroid

Still Confirm 1.9.1 Pre-3 ...

The_Minecraft_Reporter

Is this an intended feature or not? If it is not intended it should never be fixed because it is harder to obtain ice than water, so that somewhat balances it out. Another reason it should stay is it makes some players very happy (Not all) and it does not do any harm to gameplay, it actually increases gameplay in my opinion.

user-f2760

it probably isn't, but, we'll see

Grandfroid

It should be fixed, obtain unlimited ice is one of the easiest thing to hav with a simple ice farm. It don't make me as a player "very happy", quite the reverse thing in fact !

And it destroy the game since the "normal" way to travel are Horse, Minecart or Nether (and with Ice Boats you travel WAY MUCH FASTER than "normal") so stop being a child please ...

Iceboat are 1) a bug, AND 2) a non-sense

user-f2760

@unknown it may be a bug, and it may not be, we have no official word from mojang.

And throwing insults in sombody's face isn't nice.

Logan Touya

It's also true several minecraft Youtubers/streamers support the feature, intended or not. So calling just one supporter of this a 'child' raises the question why several other people [including the community-famous ones] also support it. [It's okay to be against it; I personally was really surprised when I saw videos made specifically on the topic by LogDotZip and CaptainSparklez, 'begging' to keep it]

And like I said, silk touch is semi-late game. Even though it would be easy to gain the ice once you have a silk pick, a lot of time and effort would have to go into making the tunnel/track anyway!
Take Etho's lp and the tunnel he made around episode 445 [around 5:33 in that episode he talks about it] for example, he says it took over three hours to make and gather resources; plus the fact it isn't even complete!
It helps him have more places to work with, more creative ideas in completely different biomes far from home without having to make 5000 trips both ways with materials.

Not to mention Hermitcraft [ironically Etho also helped build it] has created a boat racing track; so this could be used as a fun novelty or ride in an amusement park.

Paola Mancini

Just a thought;

Let's stop arguing over if we should keep it or not and let Mojang decide, alright? This is their choice, not ours.

Creeper9207

Paola Mancini but we can influence it, companies generally do what the players (in mass) want.

Paola Mancini

Yes, BUT it's still their choice, and we should be able to agree on keeping it rather than starting arguments over a video game.

This is not a discussion forum. This is a valid bug report. For feature suggestions or changes please see: Minecraft Suggestions on Reddit.

[Mod]Les3awe

Confirmed for 1.9.1-pre1 / 1.9.1-pre2

[Mod] redstonehelper

@@unknown: There is no need to confirm tickets for any other versions than the most recent full release and most recent development version.

user-dc9d5

Working as intended.

user-f2760

Where is your source? Only if mojang says it's intended, then it's intended.

user-dc9d5

Because this must be intended because it is awesome. And if it isn't intended then it is also intended. xD This reaaaaaally should be a feature, the whole community says that. :'(

Grandfroid

I'm part of it so not "the whole community" ...

Still not fix / confirm in 1.9.2

user-f2760

@unknown tickets won't be resolved as intended unless the mods are sure, or there is a source from a mojangsta stating this

marcono1234

Please link to this comment in the description

The following is based on decompiled version of Minecraft 1.9 using MCP 9.24 beta.

The reason why this happens is very likely that the method net.minecraft.entity.item.EntityBoat.func_184441_l() uses the net.minecraft.block.Block.slipperiness field of the blocks it is on to calculate the speed factor. This also causes boats to be relatively fast on slime blocks.

user-dc9d5

If this gets fixed I won't update until 1.10
If a Mojangster reads this please at least make a gamerule to keep these boats or an nbt tag for them so we can summon fast boats if you really consider fixing it!

user-dc9d5

By the way, if it is even a bug, it makes sence as in the real life you could do this also (not joking), even if not as fast as in Minecraft.

Ma Fi

Mojang should make this bug a feature. Most of the community like it. It does not even overpower boats since it is not the easiest to find packed ice naturally in order to make streets and furthermore this gives snowy biomes an advantage.

RimaNari

@Ma Fi You can use normal ice as well (also in the nether), and this is available in abundance. This is pretty sure not intended behaviour, it's counter-intuitive and doesn't make sense. If they want to implement a faster way to travel they should do so in an intended manner. Who know, changing minecarts to remove or increase the speed cap, or a "diamond minecart" (no reference intended... really!), which is faster. Maybe eben a minecart that is faster but has durability, to not over-power such a way to travel.
Just some ideas to show that there are a lot of possibilities to decrease traveling times in your world - without having to resort to something rather ridiculous like boats on ice.

Paola Mancini

Here's a radical idea:

Let's let Mojang decide what they want to do with this bug.

RimaNari

You mean those people, that asked their users to vote for bugs with an intonation of "otherwise it's not gonna get fixed"?

[Mod] redstonehelper

You mean those people, that asked their users to vote for bugs with an intonation of "otherwise it's not gonna get fixed"?

No, voting for bugs allows them to prioritize based on what people wish to see fixed the most.

RimaNari

... while the bugs that are less upvoted may not get fixed because they are busy fixing other more important bugs. I wanted to say that Mojang explicitly involves the community into development by this, therefore a discussion what we wanted to see done with this bug has some reason for existence. However, I am aware that this actually is not the intended place for this discussion.

marcono1234

https://www.reddit.com/r/Mojira is the place for discussions

AaronMcH

On behalf of the New Eden community I'd like to add our support for classifying this as a feature and not a bug, it adds some new mechanics which have allowed us to design quite a fun racing mini-game.

user-f2760

Can everybody please stop discussing if this is intended or not?

Vinicius

Someone create an offical forum for discutions at https://www.reddit.com/r/Mojira and link it at the descritption of this report.

For the love of god, please don't get rid of this "bug". Making boat racing courses on servers is an absolute blast. Just google up some videos about it and see for yourself how amazing it can be:

Meri Diana

@unknown Hello, there's a post about it on the Mojira Reddit, maybe add your contribution/opinion there as well? }=)
I agree (also here) that I would rather consider it a (fun) feature, but I guess it's also dependant in how ice/boats behave on other MC platforms, as they want "feature parity".

gaspoweredpick

Can confirm, boats should be fast on ice but not turbo speed.

user-f2760

No need to comment if you can update the affected versions yourself.

Paola Mancini

Oh, ok. Sorry.

Keitsu

If you can when you fix this bug, make the physics realistic. Ice has a low amount of friction so boats should be able to glide along them if already moving and slowly loose speed. Paddles do not work on ice so they should have no effect on increasing speed.

This bug also allows you to spin the boat on ice extremely fast!

loglog27

Personally, i hope they don't fix this, because it creates fast traveling which i find really useful. If you don't like it just don't boat on ice. On my server i play, ice roads are a common thing to connect towns thousands of blocks away. Removing this/fixing this will make the servers many connecting towns and roads go from easy to travel to taking very long times to travel.

CrampedSpider72

This bug is a feature now. Confirmed by Helen Zbhilyj (the community manager). I posted a picture above as a proof. She said it on official Minecraft Discord Channel

violine1101

Microsoft's Minecraft Community Manager has no say in the development of the Java Edition as far as I know. And this is the bugtracker for the Java Edition.

user-f2760

Not closing this without a Java edition developer saying so.

Vegito Rekt

It does appear as if this is intentional

[media]

user-f2760

Again, not resolving unless a java edition developer says so; helen is not a java developer!

CrampedSpider72

Well she asked a Java developer about this bug. She asked Jens

user-f2760

Then @unknown should come close the ticket himself, if that is really true and discussed with him. We (moderators and helpers) have had no message whatsoever to close this.

bemoty

Can confirm for MC 1.12.1.

Jon1337

Confirmed in 18w07c

Aaron Rhodes

Is this still an issue in 1.13-pre6?

Joseph Fowler

Can confirm this still happens in 1.13-pre6.

Nick Sloan

Given blue ice introduced in 1.13, it seems that there is good evidence that this behavior is now intended. Perhaps this issue can be closed?

violine1101

No, blue ice certainly is not good evidence that this behaviour is intended. All entities slide more on blue ice than on regular ice, not just boats.

carpet0928

Confirmed for 1.13.2-pre1.

Stef B

do people even want mojang to fix this? i mean... it's a great feature...

Uriel Salischiker

Confirmed as intended in the official livestream on 14/02/2019

Meri Diana

@unknown That would be very great news!
However, an official statement by someone like e.g. Mr. Bergensten may be imo needed to be very sure about it, unless the person in the stream said this statement came straight of someone making final decisions for Java MC.

Maybe the Mojira mods could ask the Java Devs to resolve this bugpost here by linking to the Livestream video, or the Devs could ask this question in one of their internal meetings.

Joseph Fowler

Please see the previous comments on this subject. If this is intended behaviour a Java Dev can come along and close this issue. Anything else is hearsay.

Uriel Salischiker

Yes, our policy is to wait for a dev to change it. We already poked them
