I click play. It shows a pop-up window which says that I need to install something. I tried clicking yes and no, but nothing happens and steam then says the game isn’t running.

To help us understand and reproduce the issue, could you please include details about your device and system (RAM, CPU, GPU spec)?
If you’d like you can also run dxdiag and copy the relevant information from there. (Win+R → dxdiag) - be sure to remove any personal information, just the PC specs would be useful.
According to ProtonDB, legacy Minecraft Dungeon could work file on Linux platform, so why not Minecraft Dungeon II? I think MCD team has the ability to solve this issue, rather than just close the report and abandon all Linux/macOS users.
BTW I’ll repost my screenshot here to sync my problem, since my report is closed as duplicate to this issue.
