For a while today (2012-10-26), Tumblr was down, displaying an error message when attempting to load pages. The Minecraft launcher (Minecraft.exe MD5 b63ccb43f2779cbea5d8d3ce2e3d90fb) renders this error page incorrectly. The expected behavior would be to either render it correctly, or to display something else (a blank screen or custom error message).
The two attached screenshots display the Minecraft launcher rendering the page incorrectly and Firefox rendering it correctly. The HTML source code of the page is available in text form here: http://pastebin.com/hnR4813Z

Affected Minecraft versions is a bit irrelevant for this bug since it only exists in the launcher. It appears that the launcher has not been updated since the bug was submitted (the MD5 I posted matches), so I have listed the bug as affecting all current versions of Minecraft.
The issue here is that to 'remedy' the problem we'd need to download a 9mb 'webkit' package, not really ideal just to 'solve this issue'.
Eventually we'll have it downloaded and stored in the libraries and loaded when it's available but for now there is not much focus on that.
Also, all this applies only to the new launcher.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft / Launcher version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Obviously this also happens if a connection to Tumblr cannot be established (eg. your own ADSL is down).
Better if Minecraft has an inbuilt "cannot read the news" default to use rather than raw HTML...
