Every time I install a version of Minecraft 1.12.2 or older, the download works fine, but when I click "play", the launcher tells me that an unexpected crash occurred. I tested this, and it seems to start when you go back to 1.12.2 or earlier. The oldest version of Minecraft java edition that runs is snapshot 17w43a, the very first snapshot for version 1.13.0.

LauncherOutput.txt is a file I created where I copy-pasted the Minecraft Game Output from the window into a text file. I think that may be helpful to you.
My guess is I need to run an older version of Java, but I don't know where to get it, let alone without uninstalling my current Java version.
Actually, I have a hypothesis. I run Linux Manjaro 18.04 KDE Edition (Yes, I hopped distros and I still have the same problem) and since not many people have this problem, it has occurred to me that this may be a platform specific issue with Linux. Test the difference between Windows, Mac, and any Linux distribution and see if that's the problem.
I have replaced launcher_log.txt with a different one. This one has no noise and only has details of the problem we are facing. The other one has experienced a lot of record from me playing the game, so I thought I would make this easier and remove the noise.
I have created this new log by deleting my current log, going into my launcher, attempting to run 1.12.2, and then posting the resulting crash report.
I hope you get this soon. I know this hasn't gotten a lot of activity lately.
To be more precise, versions prior to 1.13 do not run with Java versions newer than Java 8. Newer versions of Minecraft can use newer versions of Java just fine.
Hello! We're sorry you're experiencing this problem. In order to diagnose the problem, we need to look at your launcher log file. It's called launcher_log.txt, and can be found in your Minecraft folder. Please attach it to this bug report.
