I'm having this problem right now...

One work around is to change your skin in minecraft.net but that won't let you save it to your Library...

In the meanwhile, for the desperate, you can edit the launcher-skins.json file if you want to be able to switch skins quickly from the launcher. The only drawback is that the fancy skin icon won't be generated automatically for you.

If you already have skins created, you can just copy-paste the json component, but it should look something like this:

You can fill out the strings left empty.

• Under name goes the name that appears in the launcher

• Under slim, true for alex model, false for steve model

• Use this tool to convert your skin file to base 64, click copy image and paste it in under skinImage

• The rest can be left empty

Now save it, restart the launcher, and ta-da, your skin should appear under the skin tab. You won't see the preview, but if you apply it or click on edit, you should see the skin successfully showing up. If you want more skins, just duplicate the block from "skin_1": { to {{000Z" }}} one more time, add a colon between them and change skin_1 to skin_2, etc.

Okay Listen up! There's a temporary fix I found in some locked duplicate of this issue/bug (credits to some random guy😉). If you are on Windows and got 'Custom Scale' activated in your Display settings that could be your issue.

To fix it go into Settings>System>Display and then scroll to 'Scale and layout'. Deactivate any costum settings and change it back to one of the given values 100%; 125%; 150% or 175%.

Probably this is only a Windows fix and also I can't say if it works for everyone.

Edit: Maybe it's also a Windows only bug?

Thanks to Overripe Papaya's comment , I was able to register a lot of skins. However, as already mentioned, the preview is not shown.

Then I made a backup of launcher-skins.json and tested it. Then I deleted the custom ones. I put the backups back together, but the previews were still not working.
It is unlikely that a simple copy and paste will change the data inside. As for the preview, suspect there's another flag set, but I have no idea.

Edit: I was curious, so I uninstalled and then reinstalled and removed Roaming>.minecraft. Then I selected the various skins in the library, but the current skin was not updated.

Edit: Overripe Papaya's comment that "other fields can be empty", However but "created" should be entered. "created" affects the order of the skin library.
In contrast, the numbers of the nodes (skin_) have no effect on the order. Updating the skin in the launcher with the node's number exceeding two digits breaks the alignment.

This is not a bug, but a data management specification, so it's probably inevitable.

I have been having this problem for at least 3 or 4 months, it started some days after I added a new account to my minecraft launcher.

So... Im having this problem, i reinstalled the launcher, java, .minecraft folder
same thing.. please help and please fix this as soon as possible.

I've been having this issue since 1.16 first dropped in June.  Before that, no issues whatsoever, but as soon as the new version dropped, I was immediately unable to add new skins to my library.  There have been numerous reports about this issue, but what strikes me is the fact that per the listing above, there's not even a developer assigned to this, even though in the comment thread a (presumably) developer claims they are aware and working on it.  It would seem that if this was being worked on, there would be a name in the "Assignee" field.

The problem persisted after I reinstalled Windows 10 on my machine in mid-July, but strangely enough, my son's new system which never had the game on it previously isn't currently experiencing the issue.  Deleting and reinstalling the game on my system has had no effect, regardless of whether I try before or after restoring backups of my old worlds.  It would be fantastic if somebody actually took a look into this.

Hey everyone, I apologize for the delay with this. It's taken longer to fix than intended. As some comments have mentioned it works fine for some people, which in our case, applies to everyone in our team. Because of this we've been unable to reproduce the problem which has delayed the fix. Our team has also a lot of other things going on, plus vacation times. I can't give an ETA when we might have this fixed but we are focusing on this problem currently.

@unknown for the MCL project we are not using the status field assignee on reported bugs, because we track this on our own private tracker.

We've pushed a new Beta release today containing some fixes for the Skins page. Please go ahead and see if that has resolved any of your issues.

Is this supposed to be fixed, because I'm still getting the same issue. AFAIK I'm up to date on the latest java version.

I'm also using custom display scaling on Windows 10, so I guess maybe @unknown is right. I'm not messing with my scaling to try and fix it though.

Hopefully mojang devs can try out custom display scaling on win10 to see if that's the key to reproducing it.

After turning on the launcher beta and updating the launcher, I'm still having the issue.
And no, custom display scaling and resetting launcher-skins.json didn't work either.

This is NOT resolved! I play in MCPE and I'm forced to be Steve or Alex. No custom skin from anywhere, even my Skinseed trusted custom ZloyXP skin. Affects 1.16+
