If .minecraft is a symlink to another folder (in my case another internal storage device), the launcher fails to start entirely, with various errors about missing files and translations.
Copying .minecraft to my home folder or mounting it to that location allows the launcher and client to start without issue.
Using a symlink worked in the previous launcher version, and would be preferable to a mount point or storing on my home folder directly.

I also cannot run the launcher. I have the .minecraft folder symlinked to a location on another drive. Attaching a bit of the log produced when launching from a shell.
