Minecraft Launcher gives 'NO_SUCH_VERSION' error when trying to launch Java Edition

Bought Minecraft off the official site, downloaded Minecraft Launcher from the Microsoft store with difficulty (wasn't downloading and installing [stuck on pending]). After finally getting the Minecraft Launcher, I install Minecraft Java and get an error similar to the first image below (unable to locate the java runtime). In an attempt to fix this, I close the minecraft launcher and delete the .minecraft folder from appdata. Now I get the internal error message when I press play (second image).

Prior to deleting the .minecraft folder, I could see the installations and patch notes now nothing comes up on both tabs (last image).

Any advice/help on this would be appreciated.

Hi there!

Could you please uninstall the Launcher, delete .minecraft folder (copy its content elsewhere before deletion), delete Minecraft Launcher folder from C:\Program Files (x86) and then reinstall, restart your computer. Then please try to boot the Launcher.
If not, please do above once more and download windows 7/8 version of the Launcher and install it.
Please also try running the Launcher in BETA mode.

Is the windows 7/8 version of the launcher on minecraft's site?

None of those options worked, same error message comes up.

Going into the .minecraft folder, normally there should be a "versions" folder, but it is not there?? I am also having the same issue as him

I also have this problem in win 10

Seeing some people on MCCS who also have this issue and the link from @@unknown doesn't work because it contains example.com URL in the link, here again: Follow part B of the instructions at https://minecrafthopper.net/help/hosts-file/.

None of the above helped. I've seen somewhere that a guy was helped by reinstalling windows, but I think that's too radical a solution.

Found probably the only solution on the entire internet.

For Windows:

Run the Notepad program as administrator.

Click the "File" button in the upper left corner, then click the "Open" button.

In the bottom text box, paste C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts.

Find and delete all lines related to Minecraft / Mojang.

Save the file and restart the mojang launcher.

for Mac

Open Terminal.

Enter the command sudo nano /private/etc/hosts

Enter the password for your account.

Find and delete all lines related to Minecraft / Mojang.

Save the file and restart the mojang launcher.

Resolving this as CR as we can no longer reproduce this bug.
