Launcher won't open on Mac 10.5.8

Downloaded new launcher and replaced the old one in Applications folder, but it won't open. Nothing happens, not even an error.
Also, instead of a grass block icon (for the Dock) it is invisible.

Have tried downloading the launcher a few times but each time is the same.

I am also having the same issue. I was able to open it by right clicking on the icon and choosing the 'open' option. However this just made things worse... It says that the new launcher isn't supported on mac 10.5.8. So we can't play the new version of Minecraft 1.6.

And now I am stuck, because the new launcher replaced my old one and I cannot find anywhere on the Minecraft website to download the old launcher. So now I can't even play at all...

Um, sorry but why is this marked as 'Resolved'? It is not resolved - I still can't open the launcher and so can't play.

It is resolved because we do not support and or intend to support the too-old-version (9 years+) of java.

You can update to java 1.6 and all should work again.

OK. Thanks at least for some information. It looks like my 6 yr old Mac is now too old to run Minecraft as it is only 32 bit and I can't seem to find out if I can get Java 6 for it 😞

It would be great if in future if there are updates which require you to have certain computer specs / operating systems that Mojang make some mention of this on their blog eg. 'this requires you to have Java 6 or higher - for more info click here...' . If I had known this was coming I would have done something about getting a new computer in the last financial year.
