Unable to play 1.6 on osx 10.5.8 using new launcher (Invalid memory access of location)

I just got the new launcher from Mojang.com and tried it.
First, the snapshot download was a bit slow (slower than downloading 1.5 with the old launcher). But then, when it had finished I got an error message in the new lawncher's development conslole that said:

Client> Invalid memory access of location 0x0 rip=0x0

I restarted the computer to clear RAM but still got the same errror.

I saw this first on launcher version 0.2, it's still there there with version 0.3, but version 0.0 had been fine.

Can you attach a copy of the entire console output?

I did a search of all the sources from the snapshot jar, and the string "Invalid memory access of location" was never found. I believe this may be an issue with LWJGL, especially considering how a normal java program cannot access raw memory, which is what the error is implying.

Still the same invalid memory access error with launcher 0.4, and ... is that a new LWJGL nightly?
Tried running both snapshot a and b, no difference.

There is some new feedback - From memory,
'Game exited with no errors detected (exit code 139)'

McMacker4, yes I expect there is no way to get Java 1.6 running on this machine. Is there an older version of the launcher available? (Downloading old versions here http://minecraft.net/download gives an error too; see new attachment) Or some other option that doesn't involve me spending money for a new machine for my kid brother?

This is the error received trying to access the old launcher at http://minecraft.net/download using Mac g5 10/5/8

I' sorry to tell you but the older launcher will only let you play minecraft 1.5.2. but won't let you play 1.6.2 (the newest version) since the new launcher uses a different location on your hard drive to save the game's files. I'm afraid there is nothing to do but get a new computer. I'm sorry 😞

As i've seen in the screensot you uploaded, the one that said something about the architecture if your computer, that could mean many things. It could mean that this launcher can only run if it is in your Applications folder (which I doubt). Could mean that you are using the new launcher (which I don't think it supports PowerPC based Macs) thinking that you are using the old one...
Could be many things.

If you have an old Mac running OSX 10.5.8 Leopard with 32 bit you can't get Java 6 (aka Java 1.6). This means you can't run the new launcher and so can't play Minecraft 1.6.2 . The old launcher will only run Minecraft 1.5.2 .
This was my situation so I had to upgrade my OS to 10.6 Snow Leopard. This comes with Java 6 and now I can finally run Minecraft again. You will probably need to do the same. Upgrading your OS is cheaper than buying a new computer at least.
Good luck

McMacker4
