My family has been playing minecraft using 2 ipads for years but recently it is not working since I've updated my ipad ios or Minecraft update I guess.
We usually play without login but could find other member in friends so that we could play in the same world.
Since early October, we were not able to find each other in friend so we logged in and add friend so we could find each other in friends tab but once we tried to join the world together, the page shows "connecting to multiplayer game" but it ends with "unable to connect to world".
So here is my symptom
(without log in) can't find other family member from the "Friends" tab who is on the same wifi which were working until last month
(with logged in) able to find/see other family member from the "Friends" tab as "Joinable Friends" but once try to join friend's world, it ends with "Unable to connect to world"

This appears to be MCPE-36190.
We are also "Unable to connect to world" on our iPad when the host device is Minecraft for Windows 10. The problem started in the past few days. We tried unfollowing each other's accounts and re-inviting each other, but it didn't help. Note that I reviewed MCPE-36190, and the issues & workarounds described there were not consistent with our problem.
Update: I noticed that our iPad is running 1.16.50, but our Windows 10 device is running 1.16.40. Could this version mismatch be the source of this bug? An update for Minecraft for Windows 10 doesn't appear to be available at this time.
The version mismatch is not causing the problem. 1.16.50 is an iOS-only update that is multiplayer-compatible with 1.16.40.

I’m also playing on an iPad and for the last week or so am unable to connect to the Minecraft servers to play with my kids. It just keeps telling me to connect to the internet but everything is set up properly. There is no reason it shouldn’t be able to connect.
