Magma Cubes damage players from too far away

Small sized magma cubes can damage the player prior to even colliding with them. Damage will be taken even if the small magma cube lands in front of you or beside you.

*Edit: This issue is also notable on bigger sized magma cubes but is significantly more notable on smaller sized magma cubes.

To contrast with Java edition, small sized magma cubes have to land well within the player in order for the player to take damage, and even then, sometimes the damage is avoided.

Tested and found that both large and small magma cubes hit the player when the edge of the player's hitbox is < 0.15 blocks from the edge of the magma cube's hitbox. That does not seem like too far to me, but I am not able to compare to Java Edition.

  • Tested for large magma cubes by spawning one in an enclosed area with a two-block gap on one side and teleporting myself progressively closer.

  • Test for small magma cubes by setting up a repeat, always-active command block to teleport one to the middle of a particular block every tick, and teleporting myself progressively closer.

I have attached two videos comparing Java versus Bedrock magma cube damage behavior. The flat world is the Bedrock instance, the tundra / snow world is the Java instance. There is a clear difference as to how damage is registering on the player and how often it is occurring as well. Not sure if it's hitbox related or something else but I do believe there is an inconsistency. When playing Bedrock in survival, I have noticed the difficulty in avoiding damage from magma cubes, while in Java survival, this has not been the case.

Thank you for the videos to compare. After looking at them, I really think the bug is in Java edition because the small magma cubes push you without damaging you at all. To me it looks like the Java attacks are broken, while the Bedrock attacks are consistent.

I searched and found that Java magma cubes are reported to be affected by MC-2310 in terms of making the attack range of large magma cubes too large (MC-215294). I would guess that the same mechanic or calculation is making the attack range of small magma cubes too small in Java.
