Item numbers are not visible in creative inventory hotbar. You must open up a chest or your inventory to see them.

Let me list my arguments:
1) This "feature" is not present in any other versions of Minecraft.
2) This is inconsistent. Showing items numbers only in your inventory or in a chest is not continuous.
3) This is just plain annoying. Making me open my inventory just to see how many dirt blocks I have is annoying.
Yes it's inconsistent. I completely agree with @unknown. But since the creative inventory is still a work in progress, it is very likely that devs are aware of this inconsistency and will fix it later.
The fact that you consume a compass when using on a lodestone in creative mode also makes you need to know how many items you have. MCPE-96258
This issue should definitely be reopened, not only because of Java Parity but people may still need to see the numbers of items in their hotbar, especially since on the Windows 10 edition, you grab a stack of items/blocks instead of one individual item/block. At the very least there should be a toggle in the accessibility or video settings that shows the number.
No need for a toggle, I simply don't see a situation where the numbers in the hotbar would get in the way
I think this WAI. (You don't need multiples of items in creative, as the items don't get used up when placing them. However, you get a full stack when transferring the items in chests/inventory etc)
Edited for clarity.
