I was flying around with my elytra and I noticed that it was low on durability. I had collected some phantom membrane to repair it when it showed the broken texture because I haven't seen it before. Then my elytra ripped I fell to the ground I had swapped it out for a chestplate and was holding it in my hand when it suddenly had disappeared I was confused on where the elytra had gone. Maybe I threw it by accident or put it in my ender chest but it was nowhere to be found
To reproduce: (from @unknown)
Create a world in creative
Equip yourself with an elytra and place a chestplate in your hotbar
Give yourself multiple stacks of rockets to fly
Change the gamemode to survival, turn difficulty to peaceful, and turn on keep inventory
Activate the elytra and use the rockets to fly
Fly in a vertical direction as to give yourself more time to see the problem when falling. Reaching 3000 blocks high is a good point to be.
Continue flying until the elytra is depleted of durability
Once you have depleted the durability, the elytra will not turn into the broken elytra texture but rather will simply remain at zero durability. This however is a visual glitch and in reality there is no elytra anymore. This can be seen by attempting to swap the elytra with the chestplate in your inventory.
Observed result:
When the elytra reaches zero durability, it simply gets deleted and no longer exists physically even if visually it is still present.
Expected result:
Once the elytra reaches zero durability, it becomes a broken elytra that can be unequipped and repaired at a later time. It should not be deleted or vanish in any case.

Resolving temporarily as Awaiting Response. Does this issue occur every time an elytra reaches 0 durability? Additionally, are you using any resource/behavior packs? This ticket will reopen automatically when you reply.
I have this same exact problem. And it happened to my friend, but he randomly got it back in his inventory 5 minutes later. But then it happened to me, and the elytra never came back.
Can this be reproduced in a local, single player world, or does it only happen when joining a multiplayer world, Realm, or server?
We are having trouble reproducing this issue - do you have any additional information to help to pin down this issue?
Are you using any resource or behaviour packs?
Would you be able to provide a copy of the world with elytra that become bugged as you have mentioned?
On Windows 10 you can use the Export world feature.
On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds
On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS. (Please do not purchase a Realms subscription just to provide a world to us - but if you have a Realm already this may be a viable option if you wish to do so.)
If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.
Confirmed in iOS following the steps in the description, however I could not reproduce in Windows 10.
This bug happens when the elytra durability also is not updating visually in the equipped slot. The durability only updates visually when you unequip or use a rocket. When it reaches 0 durability (but not visually) you cannot unequip it to an empty space; it glitches back to the chest slot.
Here is a video of durability updating with rocket use but not with gliding on PS5: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/817149882648231947/980502959647494164/181107e008f52-master_playlist.mov

Here is a glitched 0-durability elytra on iOS, which disappeared when I relogged:

I have had the issue with the elytra breaking and vanishing as well, though I am unable to replicate it currently in the Wild Update. It's happened to me four times, twice on a realm, and twice on a world with a friend, before the update. Any time it had happened, I believe someone else was online, though I'm not certain if that's causing the issue to happen.
I have also had many, many issues with the being unable to unequip armor through the inventory. I've had it happen often with any piece of armor, as well as being unable to move items in my inventory for no reason. Though, any unequipable armor is able to be replaced by equipping armor through my hotbar, and solves the issue of being unable to unequip it through the inventory. Unmovable items are harder though, but re-logging has solved it, as well as if the item is stackable, adding another item to its stack by picking it up.I have also had the durability not updating visually, though unequipping and reequipping seems to solve that, and I've had the issue on all types of armor.
I play on Switch. I have tried replicating the elytra problem just now, but I haven't been able to, with and without someone else online.
Closing as Cannot Reproduce. If the issue still occurs in the latest version of the game, please reopen the ticket or create a new one.
I have just experienced this same issue, so evidently the bug still exists and should be fixed as soon as possible.
As I was flying, I suddenly started falling. I knew my Elytra was almost dead at the time, so my conclusion was that it had broken. I swapped it for my chestplate as I fell to minimize fall damage, but no Elytra appeared in my hand when I swapped the chestplate from my hotbar. This happened on an iOS device.
Can confirm.
Once the elytra reaches zero durability, it no longer exists in the game. It gets deleted. Visually it may still appear as though the player is wearing it but it cannot be unequipped but another elytra or chestplate can be placed over it in the slot.
