Minecarts pushed with pistons get stuck on track

When a piston is used to push a minecart onto the end of a track (where the rail is aligned with the direction of motion), the minecart does not continue moving on the track. Instead, it immediately stops and stays there until manually moved. This happens even if the minecart is pushed onto a powered rail segment.

Steps to recreate:

  1. [media]
  2. Press the button to activate the piston.

Expected: Minecart pushed onto track and continues moving.

Actual: Minecart pushed onto track and stays still on first segment.

I believe the same thing happens with items pushed on ice by a piston. You would expect the items to slide, but they don't. Apparently, pistons only reposition entities but do not impart momentum. This is counterintuitive.

However, minecarts staying in place on rails may be important for contraptions that move minecarts around by pushing the rails with pistons, such as flying machines, item transportation and filters, and translocators.

It is, my Redstone machines won't work now because the minecart won't move with the rail.  Nor will it move in synchronous with the blocks underneath it.  For example, if I place a piston with a row of blocks in front of it underneath a boat, the boat will move with the blocks.  If I do this with a minecart, the minecart stays in place.  This is especially aggravating since I build Redstone machines that rely on the minecarts to be pushed with the other objects.
