Was fighting the wither and the dash attack was acting strange. Once it got to half health, it would dash straight down, and it seemed to dash more often than normal. I was at ~y30-40 and it went straight to bedrock with one attack. It also seemed to dash attack more often than normal, and was backed up by the number of blocks on the ground. I fight the wither on a regular basis for cobbled deepslate, and I usually get 1 1/2, 2 shulkers of items from a fight pretty reliably. I did three fights in a row, using my normal methods, and got 2 1/2, 3 shulkers each time. Definitely not complaining about the extra deepslate, but the going straight to bedrock is obviously not intentional and causes a lot of fall damage, and the extra dashes made the fight a lot harder, so I figured it would be good to be aware of. Next time I fight withers I'll try to get video.

Was not able to replicate on a creative world outside of realms.
(Switched to survival when fighting wither)
Based on comment from MCPE-173197, this happens in single-player worlds, so moved to the MCPE project.
One uploader on bilibili said that the possible condition of this dash is that wither is stuck among bedrock, which means unbreakable blocks on top of the wither triggers this bug.
In Chinese Minecraft Wiki Community, someone said that the dash time is a little bit longer than expected, and because wither dashes so fast that it cause the horrible dash.
A new video has been uploaded, which is recorded by myself. 1.20.20.21Beta, single player.
What a chunk digger!
I can replicate this in 1.20.12. But it only happens when the wither is stuck in bedrock or when it is above a water area. It seems that the wither ignores any block below when performing the dash attack if it is in contact with either water or lava (flowing or source). I can't find any explanation to the bedrock one. So far it doesn't happen when fought on solid ground at least for me.
Edit: after trying for a while with endermen, I found an easy way to replicate the bug. And it renders the aforementioned theory obsolete.
Place a bunch of mobs with moderate health near the spot where you are going to create the wither.
Summon the wither.
Attack it until it reaches the 2nd phase (use strength 10 for example), and watch it use the dash attack just after you've done that.
You need to have mobs within 10 blocks of the wither to successfully replicate the bug, and it is advised to use mobs with moderate health so that they don't die before the wither gets to its 2nd phase.
It seems it has something to do with its first charged attack, I can't think of more possible explanations. A video was uploaded to show how it works.
This just happened to me and hour or so ago. I was going to fight two Withers, one after another. The first Wither behaved appropriately I guess, nothing weird. Second Wither dashed straight down at half health, carving a perfectly square hole about 60+ blocks (was at about y75, Wither dashed down to y15).
It went straight down into a huge cavern, and it was a pain to finish the fight, with all the blocks laying around from the first Wither, and then from this one going straight down, the game became very laggy.
Successfully reproduced on v1.20.81 in dedicated server and singleplayer. Foolishly fought the wither on the primary island in The End. When stage two should have begun, the wither instead drilled a hole through the entire island and disappeared into the void. This makes the issue especially problematic in the End, as Endermen seem to reliably trigger the bug (as seen in a previous comment).
I have learned that if you put the game mode on easy, then it is less likely to do this. Still does this occasionally but much less often than on normal or hard. But the fight tends to be a bit too easy.
I have been fighting the whither in the end to avoid my over-world from getting destroyed while I farm stars. The main problem with this, is that when it does dig straight down, it always ends up in the void and killing itself and destroying the star. Not to mention the potential of sending me and my hard earned netherite gear into the void as well.
The other issue that this digging behavior causes, is the resulting items dropped from destroyed blocks. The amount of items that are left on the ground causes so much lag that it usually crashes my game. To be fair, that is more so the Nintendo Switch's limitations, but ultimately makes the fight unplayable a large percentage of the time.
Just occurred to me in my local world. Version 1.21.21 on an iPad. I usually fight the wither over the ocean, bc my device lags out if there’s a lot of broken blocks around. My technique used to work fine, but now the last 2 fights I’ve done he’s dashed straight down at 50% health, broken a bunch of stuff, and particularly lagged me out. I was able to finish the fights, but had to lead him away to get better fps. The 2nd wither was 1000 iq and also took out my conduit with his downward dash
Hi
Does this issue occur only on Realms or it can be reproduced on local worlds?
