I have been playing Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch (always docked to the TV & LAN connected) for about 7 months and I have pretty much only played in the world I first started in. I have noticed in general some performance decreases over the last few updates but since the 1.20.30 update (I believe) the performance inside of the village is almost unplayable and most gaming sessions now result in the game flat out crashing.
I have been calling a village home for about the last month. I have built the village up to be quite thriving with about 35 to 40 villagers roaming around with maybe like 20 structures but I don't have anything fancy going on like special farms or anything - just a few animal pens and gardens - I'm a pretty basic player. As soon as I get close to this village I can feel the graphical performance slow down significantly and almost immediately when in the village blocks start not loading correctly when going in certain areas. Doors, gates and trapdoors operate quickly but their animations don't seem to change right away or even half change so I have no idea if things are opened or closed without purposefully bumping into them to check. Planting & harvesting are the same way - animations are 15 to 30 seconds behind the action. However the absolutely most annoying thing is interacting with anything like inventory, villagers, crafting tables, chests, enchanting tables etc. where it can sometimes take anywhere from 15 seconds to well over a minute to display the content/options. Usually with that delay is also a sound issue where sounds aren't being played correctly or at all and then it just vomits out all sounds from the last 20 to 30 seconds at once and catches up for a bit. This all seems to be made even worse when the game is auto saving with the little chest in the corner. If I see the auto save icon working I can't even attempt to remove or place any blocks in the village because they won't appear/disappear for extended periods of time. Now since two nights ago it seems I can't even play in the village because within a short time of being there the game just abruptly crashes at some point doing nothing specific stating "The software was closed because an error occurred." I have been seeing these crashes at least once if not twice a session at this point.
I don't understand what is going on here but it is very frustrating to even play the game at this point in the proximity of the village. I have invested over 1245 hours in this world in 7 months and the last 5 weeks around this village and I really don't want to start over again because of this village issue. If I am outside of the village I can usually play without any of these issues except some slow block loading when out exploring or when the game is auto saving; then I take a minor performance hit briefly but nothing like being in the village where the auto save seems to take 4 to 6 times as long as normal and kills overall game performance and fluidity completely.
Is there something specific going on with villagers that is known or something specific in the village that could be causing this or how can troubleshooting start on this? I don't really know how to replicate or repeat the issues but it is just so many overall performance issues - in a village which I really don't think is very elaborate compared to some things seen by others.

I do have a few zombie villagers that were trapped by some water and pushed into a cave where a zombie is as well right beside my base but it was all "natural" and I have not done anything to them or with curing because I haven't made it to making potions yet 😞
Most of these performance issues have been occurring since before I discovered them trapped there aside from the game straight up crashing.
Well I made a copy of my world yesterday then committed some atrocities waiting a little while in between each and trying different things to repeat the issues.
I first killed the five zombie villagers and zombie trapped by water in the cave beside base.
I then moved on to killing 39 villagers and 6 nitwits.
I then moved on to killing my 22 cows.
Finally I killed my 14 sheep.
I feel like the overall game performance (frame rate?) improved after everything but I still see some delays when interacting with things such as doors, chests and enchanting table like I was seeing before - but it doesn't seem quite as extended as before. Again all these issues are much worse when the game is auto saving - and the auto save takes a lot longer inside of this village. I played a while outside of the village last night prior to killing everything and performance was completely normal but when I came back into the village the performance tanked then the game crashed within 5 minutes with "The software was closed because an error occurred." message. After I started eliminating villagers I didn't seem to have any more crashes at this point. I will do a little more testing tonight.
i also have had this issue! for me, if i have even 5 villagers in a village my game experiences the same issues as OP stated. block lag, being stuck waiting for a UI (chest, trading, inventory) to open for 30-60 seconds, etc. i dont know what the issue is but at this point i had to move my main storage away from my village area because of these lag issues.
