Can confirm. For me, it wasn't necessary to repeat steps 2 and 3 as the crash occurred immediately on the first try.
This is extremely similar to MCPE-138641, but that involves manually placing another chest, as chests pushed by pistons cannot merge into double chests if the adjacent chest is also being pushed by a piston, and I highly doubt that's the case here unless unloading and reloading chunks trick the game into thinking that chests pushed by pistons can be merged.
Unlike MCPE-138641 , it will not cause BDS crash.
