1. Redstone torches can't power redstone components (other than torches) while placed (except piston)
2. Redstone torches doesn't pass signal through blocks to other torches which are placed opposite to it.
NOTE: It can only pass signal through piston.
Redstone torches have always behaved this way. In both Java and Bedrock Editions, redstone activate redstone-sensitive blocks to the side and power solid blocks above. Then do nothing to a solid block that is to the side. When attached to a solid block that gets powered they turn off.
In Bedrock edition only, redstone torches attached to pistons also get depowered when the piston is activated: see MCPE-17909
