The character creator has a lot of issues in the current release and preview that either make it difficult to use or impossible. In the preview it's still somewhat usable, but in release 1.20.80 it's completely broken.
Observed behavior in 1.20.80:
Clicking on any character part attempts to load a store page (unsuccessfully) instead of selecting it, making it impossible to edit characters. Capes and emotes are also affected.
A lot of items are missing across all categories, most noticeably capes and emotes.
Button to see all skins doesn't work for custom packs.
Classic skin is changed to persona when entering capes and emotes tabs.
Persona isn't changed to classic skin when entering the classic skins tab.
Character pieces no longer have colored square frames based on rarity and just look like marketplace items instead.
The list of featured items is triplicated.
Duplicate "My Characters" screen when navigating to it through the sidebar instead of the back button.
Character is animated when entering any of the tabs or categories despite the "Screen Animations" setting being turned off.
Persona no longer spins with a "Your character has been saved" message when exiting to the dressing room. Classic skins still behave normally.
The only thing that still works correctly is selecting and equipping classic skins. There is a workaround to edit characters though, at least partly.
Workaround
Enter the achivements screen, find a reward from the same category as the part of the character you want to edit and press "View Reward". This will take you to a working screen which can be used to pick and choose between your owned pieces of that same category. This process needs to be repeated for each part, and only works for categories that offer achievement rewards.

I am also experiencing this. My cherry blossom cape and pride progress cape are completely missing from the character creator. The pan cape also needs to be repurchased
All my capes are gone including the rare founder cape. Im missing not only the founder cape but the pride and cherry cape
After the update, I went into character creator and it just crashes the game for me. It only happens when I try to load character creator, every single time. I didn't even think to check my capes and such. I will have to do that when I get back on tomorrow. Nintendo Switch
sure the work around works but u cant have more than one cape show up at a time, AND I HAVE FOURTEEN CAPES!
@unknown - I'm not sure what you're referring to, but it certainly isn't what this report is about. Keep in mind that some multiplayer servers may disable characters that go beyond certain size limits, and that there is a toggle in general settings to "Only Allow Trusted Skins", which replaces all custom skins with default ones when enabled.
might not be caused by the same thing, but four out of my five character whatcha-call-its are completely inaccessible. as far as i can tell, they all broke after i tried to edit my persona (i think that's what it's called?)
i could edit the hair and skin but then i'd edit the eyes and it would stop registering anything and no buttons would respond either. forced to close the window, i did, and then the slot i was using is unusable.
man at least i have one slot left ;-;
This issue is fixed as of today.
