Warning message about permissions to post screenshots to Realms Stories has a broken link

+1, I am running Minecraft Bedrock v1.20.81 and also stumbled with this error message when trying to post a Realm Story with a screenshot and text.

The error message is "Unable to post new story. Please check your internet connection and try again". Just wanted to add it in here for discoverability via search engines if someone searches for the specific error message.

This could be related to an XBbox account privacy setting. If it is then the error message should say that instead of gaslighting you.

NOTE: The Xbox site structure has changed since this comment was originally written. If you previously tried the workaround but it didn't get you to where you can change the setting, try again using these revised instructions.

Possible Workaround

I had this problem but was able to get it working by changing the Privacy and Online Safety settings for my Xbox Live account.

1. Open a browser to the Xbox Settings page.

2. Sign in if prompted.

3. Below your gamertag, select Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety.

4. From the list, allow You can upload captures to Xbox.

Note that there may be additional Privacy and/or Online Safety settings that need to be set a certain way, but which I didn't have to change because I already had them set as required.

All: I am still unable to reproduce this problem after applying the workaround steps in the pinned comment. If you have not tried the workaround yourself, please do so as I believe it will fix this problem. (Note that parents must change the settings for their underage children.)

If you have tried the workaround and it doesn't solve your problem, please comment saying so and include a precise description of the steps you took and anything you observed that was unexpected at each step. Also, please include a screenshot of whatever message or screen is showing you that the attempt failed. We need this extra detail because we currently can't reproduce the issue, and so far nobody has reported that the workaround failed for them so at present we don't know whether there's really a bug causing the problem or it's just confusion because you're getting the wrong error message.

so no, workaround did not work for me. i still cannot post any stories in our friends realm

edit: im using a hardened windows install, many services were disabled in favor of privacy. could it be the source of the issue? like its occurring with achievements not working when you disable the Connected User Experiences and Telemetry service
although i have already tried enabling everything xbox related and the service mentioned above with no success. let me know what else i can try

@unknown: Thanks for the detail, it helped a lot. I wasn't aware that Xbox had redesigned their support site, invalidating my workaround instructions. I will amend the workaround instructions soon.

Fortunately, you found the right place on your own and I see that you have the toggle set to Allow as the workaround advises. So there must be something else getting in the way. I suggest you review the Privacy settings on the same page. In particular, there's a setting under Others can: called "Others can see your captures on Xbox" that probably needs to be set to something other than "Only me". If that doesn't work, consider reviewing all the privacy and safety settings (in both groups, Privacy and Xbox and Windows 10).

Please let me know either way, whether or not this solves your problem. If it doesn't, there may still be a bug we need to diagnose and report to Mojang. If it does solve your problem, I can update the workaround instructions with what you learned was needed, and we can suggest to Mojang that a more informative message is needed when uploading to Stories fails.

I was able to post a screenshot after changing the setting mentioned in the pinned comment.

There is now a yellow warning banner instead of a "check your internet connection" message, but the link in the banner that I expected to identify the setting that I would need to change is not working. I have re-written the report to focus on that.

Achievements and Realms Stories are clearly "connected user experiences," so you are going to have to allow that to participate in either of these. Since you say that they don't work even after allowing that setting, I would guess that your "hardened windows install" is blocking it. I think that may be beyond the scope of the bug tracker, though, because Mojang doesn't have any control over third party apps or OS modifications.

I did some more testing with changes to the settings. Interestingly, if the "You can upload captures to Xbox" safety setting is blocked, you now get this message:

That's new as far as I know. However, the "Others can see yours captures on Xbox" privacy setting doesn't seem to interfere with uploading a screenshot, so you can forget about changing that setting.

In fact, during this testing I got both the "realms are trying to catch up" message and the "check your internet connection" message even while my "You can upload captures to Xbox" setting was Allowed, so I think it must be that both of these symptoms indicate that the Realms servers are under a too-heavy load. This isn't the only problem I've seen recently with Realms acting like it's overloaded. These problems started around the time of the CrowdStrike outage; it may be related somehow.

So what I'd suggest now is that when you get one of these messages ("check your internet connection" or "realms are trying to catch up") you wait a little and try again. Your Xbox settings probably don't need changing. Let me know if you still can't get it to work, though.

a little follow-up on my latest comment; i just joined someone elses realms and was able to post realms stories perfectly fine. i did not change any of my settings and the issue still persists on my friends realms.
