Spiders do not consistently jump when attacking

Steps to reproduce

  1. Be in a flat area with no other mobs around.

  2. Turn on coordinates.

  3. /effect @s resistance 28800 4 true

  4. /time set midnight

  5. /summon spider

  6. Slowly walk backwards each in cardinal direction while the spider attacks you.

Expected result

The spider frequently jumps while attacking.

Observed result

The spider only jumps while attacking if the player is in the -X or -Z direction.

Since many versions I’ve notice spiders' behavior while attacking seemed a bit strange, and finally I have found out it is due to a bug. Checking java edition, the difference is quite noticeable after watching spiders syncing attacks in middle air after jumping at close range. On bedrock edition they just chase and hit you independently of how close they are from you, and sometimes rarely jump, but always attacking either after or before jumping.

If java edition isn’t enough proof as example to how the expected behavior should work, here I bring the Minecraft wiki:

An aggressive spider pounces at close range. They can attack when their Y-axis position is changed, biting in mid-air.

i Can confirm this bug, currently in Bedrock edition, spiders do not attack when they charge towards you, they just attack when close enough to you

I've attached a video showcasing the behavior in Java Edition, and it's not that different. What exactly is the issue?

In response to jarl-penguin:

Here is another video from java edition(1.21), and spiders clearly sync their attacks way more while jumping mid-air. In your video from java they barely jump because you barely move. They jump frecuently at close range, which is why in my java video, and bedrock video, I move around in order to show the missmatch on their jumping attack. Basically if you don't move around at close range, which is the exact distance they triger the jump-attack, it will be dificult to notice.

Whether spiders land more hits in mid-air due to the fact they jump more frecuently at close range on java edition, in all honesty, I don't know. It maybe plausible it's not coded for spider to exclusively attack in  mid-air when they charge, and it is as simple as code the spider jump frecuent enough to give the intended impression. If this is actually the case, then an "easy fix" would be code them to jump more frecuently at close range like java edition.

Watching the linked YouTube videos at 1/4 speed I don't seen any synchronization between when damage is take and when the spider is leaping. The leaping is just more frequent than in the Bedrock videos.

With a little testing I found that spiders leap just as much on Bedrock when their target is in the -X or -Z direction, but they do not leap at all when the target is is in the +X or +Z direction. I will update the description based on that finding.
