Nether terrain takes a long time to build and you have been killed before it has finished.

Built a portal and stepped in. Had the Building Terrain screen, which took an age, but before I could do anything, because the terrain building screen was still visible and the green line was still moving towards completion, I could hear the ghosts and them bombing me. When the nether terrain had finally finished building I was already in lava and dead. The second time the same thing happened but I had managed to run a few steps before I finally died. The lag makes the game almost unplayable now. I was not holding any maps!

This is not a bug and according to what you said, try minimizing your lag by:
*Turning the rendering distance to 8 chunks
*Turning anti-aliasing to 1
*Turning fancy graphics off
*Turning fancy leaves off

I can't reproduce this. Can you please answer some questions?
Which version was this world last played in and was this on realms, Xbox multiplayer, Lan multiplayer or single player?
And anti-aliasing should be 0 or off as it causes lag as it takes up more memory.

Single player, iOS10 fancy graphics off. There is no fancy leaves option just beautiful skies - which is on. Have no idea where the anti-aliasing option would be although I did look for it but could not find one because I think this is a Windows 10 option only - not iOS. I thought the 'building terrain' screen had been removed at version 16 for the nether but there it was again. I gave up on that world because of the tremendous lag issues/memory problems that are affecting version 1.0.0. which is limiting world size to very small areas now so Minecraft is not as enjoyable since that update - very sad.

This is a bug as the game is not performing as it used to but probably a duplicate of all the others that are complaining of poor memory usage/lag issues now.

Now on version 1.0.2. This is entirely to do with lag. Movement in the Nether is slow and 'judders'. Probably a duplicate of the other issues to do with lag. For the nether I can hear the mobs and other sounds prior to the building terrain screen having completed. Therefore the nether and the ocean are difficult areas to explore easily. I have tried on various FOV and fancy graphics is off - always.

I think this is a general lag issue. Now on version 1.0.5 and some of the issues with maps and being anywhere near ocean does seem to have been improved. However, the game still lags near flowing water whether on the surface or below although a game save and a reload does improve it. There is still a lag in the Nether meaning that you still have to wait for the terrain to appear.

This can be closed. I haven't been killed for a long time whilst moving to a new portal in the nether.
