Keyboard works in chat, but not for controlling the game

I've tried connecting the Mac magic keyboard to my iPad in an attempt to control the player by the keyboard. This allows me to type text in the chat dialogue, but it doesn't allow me to control the player.

I've also tried going into Settings and tried changing the keys for walking by selecting it, and tapping a key, but nothing happens.

I've also tried connecting another bluetooth keyboard to my iPad, and the same response happens. Can type in the dialogue window, and other text fields, but don't have any control.

As a visual side effect, when the chat dialogue is open, the on-screen keyboard doesn't appear leaving the chat input line hanging in the middle of the screen (see attached image). If moved down using the down arrow on the left, typing (and posting) is disabled.
