I noticed while playing on one of my worlds that the render distance would occasionally decrease to 5 chunks even though I have it set to 12 chunks.
It should Shay the same as what I set it to, but it seems to be changing randomly.
I don’t have any potion effects or add-ons that could be doing this, and I don’t have a reliable way to reproduce this as it seems to be happening at random.
(I know render distance decreased in the first photo because you should be able to see the front of the blimp from where I am at)
(video shows that is is decreased, and even stays the same if I try to change render distance)
I found that you can temporarily fix this sometimes by restarting the world, but I haven’t found what is causing it, whether it is a command or something else.
I will try and keep an eye on what may be causing this.
Edit: it seems to be happening when you put the switch in sleep mode and then turn it back on, and reopening Minecraft. Something there seems to have caused it today.
Edit 2: after further testing, I’ve found that it also seems to be happening when you let the switch turn itself off by not using it for a while, then turning it back on and then reopening Minecraft. It seems to be happening completely at random though
Edit 3: I’ve noticed it also seems to be happening when you pause the game, and I think that may be the main cause. Pausing the game lowers the render distance, and the bug seems to be causing it to stay lowered after you unpause.
Edit 4: Apparently also happening when using structure blocks as the ui in the structure block also lowers your render distance, causing the same thing to happen
Edit 4: Today, it happened when the game saved. The render distance fog flashed and then it was stuck at 5 chunks when the game autosaved.
Edit 6: it is also happening completely at random, and ther doesn’t seem to be a root reason that I can find as to why it is occurring.
Also it seems to be happening more often now
Edit 7: it seems to be happening on worlds larger than 350 megabytes, as I’ve noticed it has been happening on my main world which is at 430 megabytes.
It also seems to be happening when the world has at least one addon, though it doesn’t seem to be a specific addon that is causing it, as I mainly use 2 addons (realism vfx and furniture 1.4) I don’t really use many other addons as that crashes the game. I don’t think it’s the addons themselves.
There shouldn’t be anything in the addons themselves that could cause this, but maybe something to do with world size as I use the same 2 addons in a much smaller world and this has never happened.
Also the time for the bug to occur is completely random, ranging anywhere from a few minutes to possibly a few hours from what I have seen.
Edit 8: it does not seem to affect underwater render distance,
Also please fix this soon it is getting really annoying to have to exit my world and restart it just to be able to see things.
Edit 9: I tried staying in the world after the bug occurred to to see if it would resolve itself, it did not.
Edit 10: I’ve noticed if you just stand still, it does not occur. You have to be moving for the bug to occur. And restarting the world is only a temporary solution until the bug occurs again after about 20-40 minutes if you are constantly moving.
Edit 11:
Apparently this time using a command set the bug off. I’m done playing minecraft for a bit.
Edit 12: happens in any world regardless of size, and happened as soon as I entered the world today.
It’s getting very annoying to play right now especially since it already takes a while just to get into a world.
Edit 13: FIX THIS! I cleared up 100 megabytes of storage on minecraft and it is STILL HAPPENING! And I can’t fix my render distance unless I restart the world, which already takes a long time! This is getting extremely annoying.

I haven’t used any fog commands, and the only resource packs I use are from the realism vfx and wings++ add-on. Neither of those mess with the render distance from what I am aware of.
I have noticed it seems to happen when you put the switch in sleep mode, and then turn it back on again and open minecraft back up.
When you load back into the world, the render distance will be put to the minimum even if the settings still has it at 12 chunks.
Still no completely reliable way to reproduce this, it seems to be a random occurring bug. It’s Al’s harder to reproduce on worlds with addons with the scripting watchdog error bug that closes single player worlds.
Thank you for the report. This issue has been reviewed and is currently Working as Intended, and is a means to help with the performance and stability of the game.
Are you using any resource packs or playing on a world created from a Marketplace template? The apparent render distance could be caused by fog settings in a resource pack, or fog commands.
