FPS is capped at 72 on my 144 Hz display when set to Unlimited framerate

This bug is very strange and is possibly hardware specific, so I will provide as much information as possible to solve it.

I am currently running Minecraft Bedrock edition on an MSI GF75 thin 10scsxr, which has an Intel i5-10300H CPU, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti GPU. This computer has a 144 Hz display and can run Minecraft Java edition at a steady 144 FPS with the Sodium optimization mod.

When running Minecraft Bedrock however (at unlimited framerate), the FPS is capped at 72 unless I set the graphics settings abnormally low.

I am sure that this is a bug, since the FPS is capped at exactly half of the monitors refresh rate, suggesting an issue with the V-sync. NVIDIA Statistics also show that the GPU is being severely underutilized once the game stabilizes.

This issue happens even with brand new normal worlds, and the FPS only approaches 144 if the world is a void or is flat, or if I happen to look straight down.

Here are the graphical settings I have Bedrock Edition set to:

  • Render distance: 26 chunks

  • Simulation distance: 4 chunks

  • Graphics mode: Fancy

  • Framerate: Unlimited

  • Improved Input Response: On

All other graphics settings are default. I’m sure they could go higher, but I’ve decided to keep them the same as Java Edition for the sake of comparison.

So anyways, that’s all I’ve been able to confirm. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’ve also included a screenshot of Bedrock Edition running a new world. pay attention to the top right corner, where you can see the 72 FPS cap and the GPU being underutilized. The world seed is 314159265358979 (just in case you want to know)

When I was experiencing issues with my frame rates being low, it’s because I had turned off H.A.G.S. and my CPU was overworking to run the graphics. But when I turned HAGS back on I got way more consistent fame rates and my GPU started to be used a lot more which is great.

I hope that it helps you but it might not be in your case.

Please try disabling V-Sync (gfx_vsync) in options.txt and see if the issue still occurs. options.txt is located at
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftpe

Can you also check if the issue occurs in the Minecraft Preview app?

Okay so here’s some info after your suggestions:

  • H.A.G.S. was already on.

  • Trying the Minecraft Preview results in an uncapped framerate, but it’s extremely unstable and once again requires lowering the graphics settings. The GPU still appeared to be underutilized, hovering around 35%.

  • Turning off V-sync in the files appeared to have very odd results. The framerate was able to exceed 72, similar to the Preview, but the framerate once again jumped all over the place. What I noticed this time is that the GPU utilization is jumping around, going from 35% to 70% sometimes, and the framerate seems to follow. What’s going on here?

Thanks for your suggestions, but these findings are now even more baffling.

Okay, so I think I’m able to conclude that a faulty V-sync is causing the 72 FPS cap, but it appears that poor GPU utilization is introducing new issues of poor framerate outside of V-sync.

Update: More experimentation with disabling the V-sync has shown that the GPU utilization is NOT jumping around as much as I initially thought. The GPU utilization is still very low though, between 35% and 40% most of the time. On Java, it’s around 60% with a steady 144 FPS. I am still baffled.
