Any time I play in a world with my friends, their skins will solely show up as Steve instead of whatever they have equipped. Sometimes this doesn't happen immediately upon joining, but as soon as I have them off- screen for a moment, it reverts back to Steve. I’ve had my settings the same for years and this has only started happening in the last few months without any changes made on my end.
