Summary:
When launching Minecraft for the first time after powering on the device, or after a few hours since the previous launch, the game takes significantly longer to reach the main menu if a large number of files are present in the premium_cache\skin_packs folder. The impact is significantly worse on lower-end devices.
Testing produced the following results:
Device | Large skin_packs cache | Small skin_packs cache |
|---|---|---|
Desktop (Windows 11, SSD) | 36 seconds | 16 seconds |
Laptop (Windows 11, SSD) | 57 seconds | 11 seconds |
Laptop (Windows 10, HDD) | 8 minutes | 5 minutes |
This issue is problematic because normal browsing of the Marketplace and Dressing Room gradually accumulates files in the skin_packs folder. Over time, users will experience increasingly long launch times without any indication that the folder is responsible. Clearing the Marketplace cache through Settings > Storage does not clear the skin_packsfolder. As a result, users on platforms where this folder is inaccessible cannot clear it without performing a clean reinstall, which may result in data loss.
Steps to Reproduce:
Download the following
skin_packs.zipfolder. It contains 47,554 files generated through normal Marketplace and Dressing Room usage: https://mega.nz/file/n8l3GZyT#y1MLENwfxiRQy_owOQGQRtBarIXIHqV0CT1XZetqm1IUnzip the folder
Move the unzipped folder to:
AppData\Roaming\Minecraft Bedrock Preview\premium_cacheRestart the device, or wait a few hours since the last game launch.
Launch Minecraft Preview and measure the startup time.
Close Minecraft Preview
Delete the
skin_packsfolder.Restart the device, or wait a few hours since the last game launch.
Launch Minecraft Preview again and compare the startup time.
Observed Results:
When a large number of files are present in the skin_packs folder, the game remains on a black screen for a significantly longer period before reaching the main menu. The slowdown is substantially more noticeable on lower-end hardware.
Expected Results:
Launch times should not be significantly affected by the number of files stored in the skin_packs folder and should remain comparable to those observed with a small cache.
