When coding a add on I wanted to make a custom piece of armor dyable and I thought it worked because I put it in the cauldron and it absorbed the water, but it didn't change color. So, I took the code off the armor piece, and it still happened, it absorbed the dyed water. I tried it with an iron helmet and it happened again. I created a new world with no additional behavior or resource packs grabbed a bunch of armor and they all did the same thing. To recreate said issue all you have to do is get a cauldron, put some water in it with dye and use any piece of armor in it. It will not work with normal undyed water.
