I am trying to connect to a minecraft beta user on xbox but it says disconnected for both of us when one of us try to join each others servers.

Check your versions. I've had that issue before. If your versions are too far apart then it could cause the automatic "Disconnected From Server". I play on PC and my wife plays on the Xbox One. I'm currently updated to 1.2.0.31 which is the latest while my wife on the Xbox one is on 1.2.0.29.
