I have tried the same and similar commands for a while and when it comes to the /testfor command for the north it will not work.

I could provide you a temporary fix. If you have Daylight Cycle on, then see where the sun rises and sets. The sun will rise in the east and set in the west. Then you could tell where north is. Or you could use a map, the top of the map is always north, unless you turn it upside down in an item frame 😛
what do you mean by "it didn't work"? Be more specific so that maybe I could help you... What about the sun-trick?
