I've been experiencing some strange behavior with doors. On both my realm and one of my friends realms, we can't place doors in certain places. I build a 2 tall 1 wide space and place a door, but the door flashes and then returns to my inventory. If I put a block in the place I'm wanting to put the door and then put the door on top of it, the door stays. However, as soon as I remove the block and then place the door, the door flashes and then goes back to my inventory. I try placing the door on blocks around where I want to put the door and the same thing keeps happening. When someone else tries to place the door, the same thing happens. I've tried changing the block type I'm placing it on, but that doesn't change anything. I've also tried in both creative and survival with the same result.

After more investigation, it seems like a door cannot be placed on a block that does not have a block beneath it. This definitely shouldn’t be the case, right?
To illustrate further... if I place a block on another block, then place a door on that, the door will place. If I place a block on top of a block, then break the block on the bottom, I cannot place a door on the topmost block that is still there. The door places for a moment, then immediately disappears as if it never left my inventory.

@ Eric Dies: Okay, that makes sense. I can't place blocks in my tower except in the basement, because the floor blocks for the upper stories don't have anything beneath them. I just rechecked and I can place doors on the floor blocks above the glowstones I have in the ceiling of the floor below them.
And my friend's doors that disappeared are likewise on single blocks with nothing but air below them.
Good catch.
