My son plays minecraft PE in creative and recently he played a few times in survival.
Today to his dismay (and mine - as it involved desperate screaming) a few of his buildings suddenly disappeared into something that looks like the sky.
There are still a few elements and some animals visible but they are all unreachable.
It seems like his world was suddenly cut into a smaller square than it originally was and all the buildings and stuff that were outside this border are corrupted and not reachable.
Anybody knows what the problem can be and how to fix it?
Please help
Thanks in advance!

thank you, Stuart,
we did that and the issue was unfortunately not solved.
His world is actually getting smaller and smaller and more buildings are disappearing.
Please help!! there is a very desperate 8 year old here and he was just sick these last two weeks so his world is falling apart..
desperate mama here, too
after what I wrote in my last comment his whole world just totally vanished!!!
It was also turning like crazy and we seemed to have lost it forever. We restarted the iPad and the game a few times but it did not work.
I am putting this here in case other desperate people come looking for info 🙂
I got the idea to make another world to see if the whole app was compromised or only his world. When the new world worked just fine I suddenly got this idea to try to make a copy of the old world and make it infinite (it was finite and what seemed to happen in the beginning was that the borders were coming increasingly in).
That worked! The copy of the old world, made infinite, has all his old buildings and animals, whew!
The original world is compromised and I suspect that nothing will change until tomorrow and I will delete it.
I am glad that we found a solution but if this was a bug, it was a pretty bad one.
I'm glad you were able to recover the world. From your screenshots, it looks like you had a rendering glitch. This happens sometimes, but nothing is actually lost from the world in most cases, it just isn't being drawn to the screen, and the apparent sky is just the background over which everything is drawn.
One thing that can cause this glitch is when the game is running short of available memory. That's why restarting the game often helps. But if it happens again and restarting doesn't work, try closing any other apps before starting Minecraft.
There are a few other things that can make the world look like this, such as an error that occurs during a save. That's relatively rare, and can cause the world to be lost. I would show your son how to export the world to make a backup of it, or just do it yourself from time to time. It's never too early to teach kids good backup habits.
Thank you so much, @Auldrick, for your detailed answer.
How very interesting, now I understand more about it.
In our case it might've indeed been the first problem, although at that point we did do all the things that you listed: restarting, closing all apps, etc. To no avail but it might not help that it's an older iPad with not-so-much memory. I am glad I got the idea to copy the world and make it infinite - although how that worked seems counterintuitive for me at this point (as in" if there was not enough memory to play the game without glitches in his original world, how come there were no glitches in the new world and the copy of the first glitched world but then the original world just got more and more scrambled).
Also, before this he never did save his world.. I have never interfered with his game and he taught himself - so he was doing only the stuff that he thought necessary to keep playing.
I will totally teach him to back-up as we had another huge drama yesterday, as he accidentally killed his fav horse.. He is still crying real huge tears for that..
It appears that some of the chunks haven't been rendered completely( loaded completely) though the things are still there, but you cannot see them. It is a common glitch/bug. Reloading the game or placing/destroying a block over that chunk fixes it for me.

I have this issue sometimes. Saving and loading the game seems to resolve it.
