If you hold the right click button, blocks start placing, but you can only place them in a straight line and one direction(not the band, the real direction), if you move the cursor somewhere else, it doesn't place it. Here I have a screenshot of torches which i could only place to the left side and in a straight line

This behavior makes it impossible to do something like fill in a floor without clicking individually for each block. Hopefully this will be reconsidered if the underlying "recurring" bug that was mentioned was fixed 😉

Still hoping this gets reopened. Quite a few blocks no longer have this issue, such as walls, scaffolding, carpets, redstone, torches, rails, etc as of 1.16

However, this issue works as intended.
Per Helen Angel, this was an intentional change to avoid a recurrent bug. It also makes it easier to place blocks in straight lines, because you don't have to switch to a tool and break misplaced blocks as you go.
