Minecart will be floating.
1.) Put a minecart on rail.
2.) Destroy the rail.
3.) Leave there (a few chunks)
4.) Go back where minecart is.
5.) The minecart is floating higher than when it's on rail.

Confirmed to work on Minecraft PC 1.2.11. Happened to me a today. You don't have to destroy the rail, if the minecart is not on a rail the bug will occur when you leave and re-enter the chunk.

iOS - 1.4.2 and has happened for a few releases now. The minecart will float above the rail whether it is on a rail or not. I keep all my trading villagers in a minecart and they will all eventually end up floating above the rail. Looks really weird but altering an adjacent block will make it hit the rails again. A bug definitely.

The latest Aquatic update has made it even more confusing as villagers now float in the cart as well as the cart floating. Picture added of my partially constructed trading hall and golem farm with both versions of floating displayed.

Not just with minecarts. This also happens with boats, either by leaving the chunks or reloading the world.

It appears to be a client-sided issue as when I did get its Y value with the command below, it shown the expected Y value, not the floating Y value.

/execute @e[type=boat,r=8] ~ ~ ~ tp ~ ~ ~
