This seemed to happen when the game was auto saving. After a few times of this happening I now can't even get my world to load. This world was created using version 1.11.0. All other worlds seem fine. I've tried resetting my switch to see if that helps. Also nothing is showing in the system error log so I doubt an error report is being sent for this crash. If it helps I was in a village when the last crash occurred.
Edit: Deleting the game and re-downloading it doesn't fix the problem.
Edit #2: Moving game from SD card to internal system storage doesn't fix the problem. Also checking for corrupt data doesn't fix the problem.
Edit #3: I also tried uploading this world to realms (uploaded fine) but every time I try connecting to realms it wont load the world. It doesn't crash the whole game but it does say things like "disconnected from server." I tried this on my switch and phone (Samsung Galaxy S8 with android 9.0). I also tried downloading the world on my Switch but it still crashes. When i tried downloading and playing this world on my phone it just closes the game and displays my home screen.

Same thing has happened to me after the 1.11.0 update and again after the 1.11.1 update. I've put months into my world and now I can't even play it. I would like Mojang to let us know when we can play on Bedrock without fear again, otherwise I'm going to abandon the game entirely (and ask for my money back).

Same behavior started happening here in latest update and now can't get back in.
First time my son and I have ever played Minecraft. We've put in numerous weeks into this world. Going to be heart broken if this can't be fixed.
Especially without some kind of historical backup system I feel I can't picture investing time in a new world again.
As you have uploaded the world to a Realm, are you able to download it and share a copy here?
On Windows 10 you can use the Export world feature.
On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds
On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS.
If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.

Added the world. Let me know if you need anything else.

I'm having the exact same issue on my switch... (see MCPE-45871)
EDIT: here is my world download link

Having the same issue. Still unresolved. Put around 50 hours into this world and NEED to get it back

Well, I wish mine was just 50 hours. The funny thing is, I never intended to play it on console at all and just picked it up as part of my physical collection when I saw one randomly at the store. From past experience with them, this kind of game really isn't meant for controller to me, but I gave it a shot anyway and the crafting book was a distinct upgrade over most games like this and made it actually playable. I bought it in late March and now have more like 250 hours into that one world.
I'm more than happy to have more worlds at some point but not because the game doesn't work correctly and especially with reasonable assurance it might happen again so if whatever it is, isn't fixed that's probably it for me since despite the huge backlog and generally huge collection, I haven't touched any PC game since Switch released (portability is simply too good) so my Java accounts have been going unused as well.
Really hope this gets fixed because I don't want that to be the case.

It doesn't even support Nintendo cloud backup yet right? I think an incremental cloud backup should be critical if we expect to invest in worlds like this. Data loss is just mortifying experience.

I'm having the exact same crash issue. Please fix this!

Yes a fix would be great. Let's hope they can fix the problem and find a way for us to recover out worlds.

Having same issue, happened about once every hour of play time, was kindve annoying but got over it, then went to happening about every 10 minutes of playtime to now i cant even load my world. I'm living in a village if that helps any bit.

In 1.14 saving may crash the game on Switch edition. Thought this was fixed, but apparently not.

Sorry, meant 1.11.1.

I cannot access the world I've spent dozens of hours on, and that really sucks. Looking forward to this being fixed quickly

I have found a work around until a fix is created.
Solution found on Reddit:
Go to settings > data management > save data cloud > Minecraft And turn off automatic backup, then make a manual backup, After that, go to settings > data management > manage save data > delete save data and sign in in game
Basically, these steps back up your save data and dowloaded content to the cloud (you can get it back later anytime, don't worry) and then delete the save data so you have no worlds in your game. For some reason, this prevents the bug from happening and you can play on servers and realms all you want.
When you want your worlds back, go into system settings, save data management, pick minecraft and redownload your data from the cloud.
You have to do this every time you wanna switch from your worlds to servers. Save to cloud. Delete data. Sign in.
System settings, data management, redownloaded your stuff from the cloud.
Thread Link:

That would not work. Minecraft on the Switch doesn't support cloud saves.
EDIT: Correction. Looks like it does now. You may need to "Update List".

That's a workaround for people experiencing online issues, not crashing upon loading a world because there's something wrong with the game making the world crash the game.
It has nothing to do with loading a world normally because if you delete the save, you delete the world(s) that are having the issue meaning you can't play them because they're not there.

To people who think this is a duplicate of MCPE-40516: Yes MCPE-40516 was created first, but this ticket is more descriptive, and has become the main report.

I've commented on one of the other duplicate threads. I think I've been in a village each time this has happened (or near one at least).
I'll sum up the issue on my Switch:
A world will become corrupted and I won't be able to load it. (The game crashes two or three seconds into loading it).
It looks as if the thumbnail for that world is corrupted, with the top 5% of it not displaying properly.
I have been playing offline, with no mods or resource packs.
It affected my single player world, but the game would crash a lot more when I was playing split screen multiplayer
Given that the game crashed a lot while in the world, I wondered if it was an issue caused by crashing during an autosave.
This didn't happen before the Village and Pillage update.
For what it's worth, I use the cartridge version with an SD card for storage.
All of the worlds I've made since that update have now become corrupt.
I agree with the other commenters who say that it makes the game unplayable. It's not worth playing if at any point you could lose hours upon hours of work. Hopefully it will get sorted, ideally with access to our old worlds.

This has happened to me twice in 5 days. I have a backup file but it’s at least 30 hours before the save became unplayable again. This needs to be fixed ASAP. Now I’m scared to play Minecraft because of losing several hours of progress.

My issue wasn’t an online one, but just in case, I followed the steps to upload, delete, then download data from the cloud. The worlds still won’t load. It would be really annoying if that data is corrupted forever. An update like that shouldn’t get to the point of being released.

The same also happens with my world I made back in 1.8. I also had the same thing happen to me MCPE-46347

I hope the worlds aren’t lost forever. I have a backup from 2 nights ago. But I can’t keep wasting time. This is the second time in 5 days that I have suffered from this bug. And I only started playing the Village and Pillage update 5 days ago after months of not playing.

Hi
I have the same issue. Was playing local split screen and the game crashed. I can't open the world anymore. I tried copying it over normally and with experimental mode and both didnt help.
A shame to lose 5 months so I hope Mojang can fix this. The extrmely poor performance is already inexcusable and now save games are at risk. I was tempted to buy a realm and the pc version to see if I could copy this over to my pc and play with an editor but there is zero chance I am paying Mojang anything else.

Yeah I bought Realms and Minecraft on my computer to see if it would work on there. But I had the same issue on PC and iPhone. The game crashes. Even when I try to connect to Realms it gives me an error. It doesn’t crash but it says something about being disconnected or cannot connect to Realm.

I’ve noticed that this occurs when auto saving. I’m not an expert. But right before my world became unplayable it was while I was in a village. The game was auto saving while it crashed. Now whenever I try starting the world it crashes. I’m locked out until there’s a patch. I hope I’m able to see my world again. I was working on a major project at the time too.

I think we can all agree that the problem is the village and not the Pillage.

I hope this gets patched soon because I finally have free time to play Minecraft without worrying about college classes and now I can’t even play the game without thinking about losing several hours of progress. I’ve spent over 900 hours in this world and have backups but I can’t afford wasting my time creating with the thought that it can be lost any second. I was in the middle of finishing a castle before I got locked out of the save. Now I only have the foundation of the castle.

Is this bug occurring for non Switch owners?

I'm not sure. I did try my switch world on other devices but it still wouldn't work.

Me too, crash @ 11.1, after a close game with manual save
During Save, application error, then the game never can be opened, also show application error during loading the game.
The game size is huge around 240MB
No way to recover my save and finally I need to create another game with 11.1 to play another world.

My world size is over 200MB too. I have a backup of my save. But I can’t continue to keep playing the game with the fact that it can be unplayable at any time. Also I’m not using cloud saves on Switch so every backup is being stored on the Switch and SD card. And my storage is starting to run out. I also have saves on my PC and IPhone But I can’t bare to delete the saves that don’t work on the Switch. I suffer from this error twice within 5 days.

This has happened to me three times now, I am playing on windows 10 laptop. It is DRIVING ME MAD!
What is the point in paying for this game if I am going to lose every world I create?
An odd thing happens too when I am connected with my daughter on her laptop, we play together, and if she logs out of my world, my world crashes.
I am inclined to ask for my money back and just find something else to do.
I tried to export the game to add it to the link, but the EXPORT GAME choice had disappeared!

It looks like this issue is possibly going to be fixed in 1.11.3, which has been released for all platforms other than Nintendo Switch at the moment.
Yes we are aware of the issue and we are working on a hotfix for the issue. We have fixes lined up for 1.11.x as well as further improvements for 1.12.x also.

Do you think this will allow us to recover these worlds, or are they gone forever. I hope the hotfix solves it. I miss Minecraft.

I just updated my windows 10 version to 1.11.301.0 and I still can't open the world I transferred from my switch using realms.
Ok thanks for the update - while we have fixed some crashes in the 1.11.3 hotfix, some will be included in future 1.11 and 1.12 updates.

So are we going to get an update that will fix the saves that don’t work or are those lost forever

Opening the world crashed Minecraft on the W10x64 PC I am typing this comment on.
SysInfo file:

Please develop a method to recover worlds that have been the victim of this bug. This is truly devastating. ):

OK, so we know that Mojang is fixing some of these crashes that cause the world to be unplayable. But what about the unplayable worlds? Are we going to get an update that recovers worlds that are unplayable?

Actually, I think the worlds are salvageable. All the chunks and tags load in the editors I use, (at least in my case) so I think it's only a matter of the devs telling us what exactly they changed so we can do it manually.

Minecraft is compatible with the switch cloud service. If its not showing then you need to "update list" in your switch settings.

What editor did you use? Were you able to perhaps cleanup the file and get it to load? I do wonder if worst case we can build a new world with the same seed and load in all the recovered block state from the file.

The editors I used were Universal Minecraft Editor and MCCPE Tool Chest. When I get home I will experiment with the world data and try and see what went wrong. My end goal is that I can fix my world, and perhaps others here.

Regarding the crashing issue - we have identified and fixed several crashes, and we will be providing fixes for these in future updates. The world that was provided in the ticket description here now appears to be loading without crashing in our latest internal builds, so I have high hopes that you will be able to open your worlds again soon once the updates are released - thank you for your patience.

I just got my world working on my IPhone. So if you have realms check to see if it works on another device.

After getting the world to work on iPhone via Realms I’ve downloaded the world on my Switch and now it works. I would try this until Mojang releases an update that fixes the crashes while saving. Also create a backup in case.

That doesn't work for me. I've tried it many times.

What version is running on your iPhone, Jon?

I was using 1.11.3 on my iPhone 8 which is version 12.1.4.
I just happened to open it through Realms. I have no clue how it loaded the world. But it did. I’ve tried this a few days ago and it gave me a disconnected error on both 1.11.1 and 1.11.3. But for some reason I tested it again and the World loaded. The original save didn’t open but the Realms loaded. Then I downloaded the Realm on my Switch and it loaded. I didn’t do anything special so I don’t know if my case was just a rare chance. I really wish I could help more but that’s all I did.
Like others I’ve tried this before. But it didn’t work then. I’m glad the world isn’t lost and this should mean that other people will eventually be able play.

I'm having a similar problem, the world I was playing in would act weird and then suddenly crash but once I reloaded it, it worked ok. But recently I decided to save & quit cause it seemed like it was going to crash again and thought maybe if I just save and reload it then it will work ok again, nope bad idea on my part apperently cause now the game crashes everytime I load the world, this is really frustrating because I really was enjoying that world and now it seems it's all lost cause unlike the PC version on the Switch you can't freely edit or restore files. So I'd say my world I worked so hard on is gone for good most likely unless they release a update that will fix corrupted world's for the switch.
Thank you for your report!
However, this issue has been temporarily closed as Awaiting Response
I'm pleased that the workaround of uploading a world to a Realm and back to your device again has resolved the issue for many players.
We believe that many of the crashing issues mentioned here have been addressed in the 1.11.4 hotfix - would you please let us know if this is the case?

After updating my switch version to 1.11.4 I can open my old world. Thank you for fixing the problem.

After updating to 1.14.4, I can now once again access my world!
Can confirm that it works on both local and realm 🙂
Thank you 😃

I can also confirm that since updating minecraft to 1.11.4 I can also access my world again 🙂
Thank you for all the work to fix this issue!! Charl

Not sure if I should add to this or create a new report but I'm having a similar issue. I was on 1.11.3 working on a world. I didn't save and quit and just suspended my Switch as I wasn't changing worlds or even games. When my Switch told be to update I went back into the game to save and quit my world. That's when it froze on me and I closed the game through the Switch OS. I applied the 1.11.4 update and tried to go back into the same world to continue my projoect and that's when I discovered three days of work was gone. Meaning no auto saves applied. Now I've tried other worlds and this save and quit problem happens. Not all the time but it does happen.
This bug is fixed in the latest beta version, and the fix will be included in a future update when that is ready for full release (no specific date can be given). We will leave this ticket open as a point of reference until the fix has been fully released.

I know it says this issue is resolved but it's definitely not. I have lost 3 world's in two days due to this issue. The game is unplayable. Can we have some sort of an update please?

This was fixed. Make sure you are playing on the newest version of the game.

It is either not fixed or not released. I have 3 broken maps.

What version of the game are you running?

Switch shows 1.12.0

Indeed, this issue is definitely not resolved. It seems most Bedrock users on Switch don't experience this, but evidently some do.
In my case, the game crashes every hour or so, almost always during an autosave. Even though this sets me back only up to around 10 minutes, it is still very annoying and can occasionally cause items within inventories to disappear or be duplicated due to the fact that the crashes happen during an autosave. Please fix this issue Mojang, or at least give us the option to disable autosave until that happens.
Edit- Before you ask, my game is on the latest version
Another edit- Tried checking for corrupt data and also reinstalled the game, nothing changed, game still crashes as usual.

I can confirm this bug should definitely still be open; Switch software version 8.1.0 and MC version 1.12.0 and the Switch shuts the software down as per the screenshot above. The map I was trying to load is a multiplayer one which was created today (with the Switch and MC versions noted). Repro rate 100% (3/3).

PLEASE reopen this bug. It is absolutely not fixed. Running up-to-date on everything and still experiencing this on my main survival world. I can't even load in anymore.

My game has crashed a few times now. I haven't lost my world yet but I do lose about 30 - 60 minutes of progress each time this happens. My working theory is it has to do with mobs not despawning because it seems to happen less when played on peaceful then on hard.
We believe the crash causing this instance of errors has been fixed, but we are tracking an ongoing related issue here: MCPE-48406
If you would like to add a vote and any extra information to MCPE-48406 it would be appreciated.

Clearly the issue still exists, and I don't see how the game failing to launch and crashes regularly occuring during gameplay are related.

If you are still experiencing these crashes go vote for MCPE-50830!
