Multiple villagers choosing same workstation

I have a villager from before 1.11. After the update I began making workstations to give villagers professions. I placed down 1 composter, and 4 villagers changed into farmers. There were no other composters near this village. Only 1 of the villager would use the composter, but when I placed another, it created another farmer.
