Ores can't be placed on top of redstone ore.

I was in a survival world, a few hundred blocks away from my base, and I had a Silk Touch pick to collect ores and bring them back to base to break with my Fortune pick. I collected some iron, gold, diamond, lapis, redstone. When I got back to base I made a tower of the ores. Diamond on top, gold under, redstone under gold, then iron on the bottom, and when I tried to place the gold on the redstone, it took several tries and soon wouldn't place at all. I then tried Iron Ore on top of the redstone and that didn't work either. It didn't even leave my inventory it just made the hand placing animation, showed the borderlines of the block for half a second, and disappears.
