Items missing after game crashes and resterts

Random game crash (while fishing and possibly as an auto backup was being created)...upon restart and loading an auto save from a couple minutes prior to the crash, items which were moved into backpack inventory after the autosave are missing and not in the storage chest.  In this case, it was my best diamond axe which took quite a few hours of gameplay to find, enchant, enhance and get to what I wanted.  Very upset about the loss.  The stack of torches and rockets which were also lost are easily replaced but the loss of the axe is killing me.
