I am not able to repair anything using the anvil or grindstone? , i have placed diamond and a diamond pickaxe iin the anvil and nothing happens..., also attempted with various tools and armour and none of them can be repaired

I believe you would have to use a pick and a pick instead of pick and diamond to be able to repair.
