You can plant mushrooms on non dirt blocks, such as birch planks (see the screenshot attached)

please reopen this issue because why i ask you guys to reopen because it has been confirmed a bug at 1.17.40 so i try at the land it not work but if i go to a deep cave i can plant mushroom at any block let me show you guys
Picomos Playsz: this report was resolved Works As Intended by Mojang (Sandra Meister was a Mojang employee at the time), so it will not be reopened.
I think you are describing a different issue, possibly the fact that mushrooms cannot be planted where the light level is >11. That's also likely an intended game mechanic because in real life fungus generally grows in dark places.

Confirmed in 1.14.30. Only blocks I found that don’t support mushrooms are glass, ice, scaffolding, and anything non-full or light-producing.
However, I’ll say that to me it makes sense that mushrooms can grow on wood variants and many other quasi-natural blocks like slime and coal.
