I play on normal difficulty, but the weirdest thing is that the same effect happens to me. Tried peaceful, tried normal, both do the same. Sometimes directly after joining, it will take half a heart but then it stops. Extremely inconsistent, and it will damage mobs but just not the player.

Make sure you are not in peaceful mode.
I noticed the same thing but forgot I was in peaceful mode.
