Nobody said that berry bushes will have a "chance of dealing damage", that is false information. The problem is is that the berry bushes only damages players when they are near the center of it.
This is exactly what I added to MCPE-42407. DrownedZombie, can you check out the videos and repro instructions from that ticket?
Apparently, sweet berry bushes damage mobs that are falling or pushing each other. However, slimes do not take damage when they jump and fall back down. Here is a more detailed sequence of steps to reproduce:
Plant sweet berries at the bottom of a 1x1 hole. Use bone meal to grow the bush.
Use a spawn egg to spawn a mob just above a sweet berry bush. It will take damage while it is descending, but not afterwards.
Spawn the mob again. Both will take damage even after the second mob lands, since they are pushing each other. However, as soon as the first one dies, the second one stops taking damage.
Enter the hole yourself so you are pushing the remaining mob. It will take damage until it dies.
I was hoping I could use sweet berries in a mob farm until I discovered this bug.
The bug also affects players:
yesterday I created a larger field with sweet berry bushes. I was able to harvest all the berries without any damage (I was experimentally also without armor). I ran a little extra into the plants ... zero damage
Affects 1.16.0.55.
How to Reproduce: Make a five by five grid of berry bushes, but leave one empty block in the middle. Place a mob in the middle, where the empty block / space is. When the mob walks forward it will not take damage. The Mob will take damage if it is pushed by another mob or player, but doesn't take damage when walking by itself.
I think this is an intended feature. As before, just brushing past a bush slightly would damage you, and id imagine it would even annoy the devs. Now its just theres a chance every now and then a bush will deal damage. Even to you
