Pet Cats Become Lost / Displace Portals

When exploring, traveling long distances, moving at high speed (ice  boat), or traversing portals Pet Cats become lost.  Have not tested Eletra.  They also displace nether portals when following you through.  (Player returns to original portal, cat spawns new portal, which henceforth player travels to until destroyed.)

Suggested solution:  Pets should always respawn near player when despawned, or exceed a set distance.  Adding a reusable item, (flute-whistle??) would summon pet to player.  Also these animals should not be dying.  Going through the time to tame, and name your pet, you REALLY don't want them dying for no reason, I mean c'mon guiz...  Likely said whistle would summon animals who die as well.

Thanks, good luck!!

If you retrace your steps slowly, do your animals reappear?

Tamed cats, dogs, and parrots are programmed to teleport to you when you are >12 blocks away, unless you have made them sit. However, there can be a few seconds of delay before this behavior activates, and if you move fast enough to unload the chunk they are in before they teleport, then they will not teleport because they are no longer loaded. Ice boats probably move too fast for animals to consistently activate their teleport behavior. However, the animal should still be in the chunk and should resume following you when you are close enough.

If you are still able to reproduce cats creating their own nether portals, please create a separate report for that. You may want to look at MCPE-10668, too, to see if that better fits your issue.

I was not able to reproduce this bug in 1.14.30. I pushed a pet through portals going into and out of the nether, and found the pet on the other side each time.

The user's experience here of a pet creating a new portal could be a result of the pet being the first mob to enter a particular portal in the nether to go back to the overworld. The algorithm for linking portals does sometimes cause nether --> overworld travel to create a second portal in the overworld in a different location than the one used to travel overworld --> nether. See for example MCPE-61768

In addition to the point I made about ice boat speed in my previous comment, I can also add that pets do not follow players in boats travelling over water, per MCPE-47340.
