I was holding redstone which was freshly mined, but I cannot put it on the ground as the PC does.

Placing of redstone is not yet implemented on Minecraft PE. In the snapshot or build, you can only get redstone but you can't place it yet. Just wait for another release or snapshot and try if you can place redstone
