While playing in survival mode placing a sponge in a body of water acts as it should except for the sponge does not become a "wet sponge" this allows for the player to reuse the single sponge over and over without having to dry it. Breaking the block results in getting a "Sponge".

Which biome were you placing sponges in? They automatically dry out in desert and savanna biomes due to the heat.
