when fishing,and you pull up any item using the fishing rod,you get xp.
however if you look at the XP orb, its essentially covered in a black box
This also happens when killing a mob on top of the water, and the mob drops xp.

Yeah I saw this while fishing then when I killed a drowned except there was a square around the orb and the water was invisible, so you could see the bottom of the river like there wasnt any water there.
There is a black square around xp orbs in ice spike biomes, when the orb is on the packed ice/ice ; in 1.16

It also affects when an orb is on a transparent block (rails, stained glass etc), it has a weird box around it.
