there as some lighting issues when I have put lanterns in an underground area.

This looks like MCPE-58182, which is supposed to be fixed in 1.16.0.55. Was this an area you had visited before, and did the dark area appear immediately after loading the world?

Or is this a new area and the area remained dark after placing the latern?

I have returned to an area previously visited with the lanterns already in place.

Ok then the light ticket that best matches your pic is MCPE-58182. I'm guessing the chunk section was affected by the bug before you updated to 1.16.0.55 and it just needs a block update.
