Light sources don't go beyond the chunk they're in

Every light source doesn't light beyond the chunk it's in when I have reloaded a previously explored area. It's only for chunks I've already loaded, I'll go caving and mob proof with torches but when I go back to base then return everything gets cut off at chunk lines.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open the attached world

[media]
  1. .

  2. /tp 290 73 233 90 and notice that all the armor stands appear lit up.

  3. Fly or teleport to coordinates 490, 68, 233.

  4. Either place a light source there or remove the one that's already there. (The point is to cause a block light recalculation in that chunk.)

  5. Fly or teleport back to 290, 73, 233.

Expected results:
The armor stands remain brightly lit because they are 2 blocks from a light source.

Actual results:
The armor stands are in shadows. If you place a light source near them, the light levels are recalculated. If you then removed that source, the shadow does not come back.

Analysis:
There is a chunk boundary between the light sources and the armor stands. When you fly 200 blocks east, you cause the edge of the ticking area to align with that chunk boundary, with the light source on the nearer side and the armor stand on the farther side. The shadow appears in the farther chunk when you cause a lighting update with this alignment in effect.

People have observed that you can fix the shadow by placing a light source near or in it, but that the fix doesn't persist. I expect that's because placing the light source in the shadow causes a different shadow to appear at the edge of the ticking area as it exists at that time. The player then travels around looking for more improper shadows, finds the new one, and place a light source to correct it. But reciprocally, that causes the original shadow to be at the edge of the new ticking area, so it returns. It ends up being a game of whack-a-mole.

*Workaround:*

You can work around this problem by identifying where the dark shadows are and placing a torch between each one and its nearest light source, at least 4 blocks from the light source. That should prevent the shadows from forming again later. After a fix has been released, you can go back and remove the extra torches.

I am playing on xbox one and also experienced this issue it is in the game since 1.13 or 1.13.1. When you update the light at the location where the issue is, the light goes beyond the chunk like expected.

Playing on win 10 edition and this issue is very apparent in 1.14 to everyone on our server and causing mob spawning in our houses and in other areas they shouldn’t.

It can also occur between sub chunks, i.e. a 16x16x16 area in a chunk.

First, let's see if we can finally get some attention to this bug. It seems to have started with 1.13 and was even reported (though not in a clear way) for beta versions. I think this report has the best description, comments, and votes, so that's why I'm commenting here.

Second, has it occured to anyone else that this bug might be the cause of, or at least a major contributor to, MCPE-49616 (Mobs spawning in lit areas)? That report and some of its duplicates also specifically say the problem started with 1.13, and some say that the "lit" areas where mobs spawned looked dark (e.g. MCPE-55614).

Another day another duplicate report: MCPE-61601.

The mods are no longer able to reproduce this issue, and we have had no comments since 22 September substantiating that it still exists. If anyone is still experiencing this issue, please add a comment describing what you were doing leading up to the seeing the lighting problem. It would be very helpful if you could also attach a copy of the world you experienced it in and give us the coordinates where the issue happened. If the world is larger than our attachment limit of 10 MB, you could upload it to OneDrive, Google Drive, or a similar cloud service and share it with us there. Thank you.

Fixed in an earlier version of the game (pre-1.18)

I just saw this happen a tiny bit but on the surface. Before I would see it while caving. I can't say I have noticed it anymore. However I did just see some light not reaching as far as it should. It's not that obvious but enough that I began to notice while lighting up things while it is dark out. Idk if this is the same issue as this ticket. I'm on an onn tablet.

Irritated Gamer: we appreciate your participation, but you have not given information that is clear and specific enough to be helpful. You may have experienced MCPE-151266 or perhaps some other bug that is not yet defined. If you can give steps to reproduce a specific bug you are welcome to create a new report. Otherwise, please take discussion and speculation to the Mojira discord or some other community forum.

Golden Helmet: I appreciate you linking me to the possibly correct ticket.
